Looking Back: TV as a kid

I just noticed recently that there isn’t any kids TV shows on Saturday mornings anymore, for fuck sake, you’d think they’d have sent out a memo or some shit, I’d say it’s quite a big deal, no? Maybe just me then…

I can bearly remember the actual shows, Going Live, Live and Kicking, even SMTV Live (that shit was funny no matter what age you were, oh, and Cat Deely). I know I was always loyal to BBC, ITV’s shit, I think it was targeted to an older age group than mine. Thinking back, the beeb’s shows seem the more lively, crazy shit going on left right and centre, and they always had the best cartoons.

Weekdays, these were the shit. The fuckin Turtles were on, I’d kill you with a fuckin conker if you tried to stop me watching that. Ghostbusters, outstanding! Remember Knightmare, some kids guide some other kid round some sketchy castle set while being threatened by a creepy bearded man (huh?!). TV doesn’t get much better when you’re waiting for your balls to drop.

Thunda thunda, thunda thunda cats! He-Man, Transformers, Bucky O’Hare, being a cynical fucker now, it’s easy to see they were glorified toy adverts, Fuck that, if you’d told me that back in the day, I wouldn’t have cared, Skeletor was being a dick, piss off with your adult talk.

Wrestling was great back then, I remember watching Ric Flair wrestle Steamboat on Channel 4 on a Saturday, next thing I knew, he was in the Royal Rumble. We watched that on tape, Me, Mel and Karen, they probably don’t remember but we were all well into it, all cheering Flair, we’d rip the piss out of Karen for fancying the Nature Boy. (How the fuck do I remember such randomness?!)

I don’t think it’s the old rose tinted specs, TV was just better back then, not just the kids stuff, I watched Blackadder then and I watch it now, it’s still one of the best shows ever made in my opinion. There’s certainly nothing UK made today that would come close.

I always watched the old shows, BBC2 was great for these. I still love Porridge to this day, I even got Donna into it. The Two Ronnies, Morecombe and Wise, Open All Hours, the stuff of genius. I wish there was a heaven, just so I could meet Ronnie Barker. Who today is anywhere near being in his league?
