What’s the point?

What’s the point?

Somebody just asked me why I was posting my own videos and audio, though I don’t think they were seeking a deep and thought out answer it got me thinking about why I do it, why I write blogs, why did I start posting stuff on Tumblr. Lets see where this goes….

If you look at the average persons facebook updates or twitter tweets, it’s generally shit (in my opinion), we post youtube videos, quotes made by other people, news articles, funny stories. Not much of it is actually original stuff from ourselves. When we do, it’s rarely anything of any content. I don’t know why this is, and don’t get me wrong, I do it. If I’ve been watching Blackadder, I’ll post a funny Blackadder video. If I’ve read an interesting news article I’ll post a link. This may reflect my personality a bit but it isn’t my own, I didn’t create it, all I did was Ctrl+c and Ctrl+v it into a box.

What I’m trying to do, and I’ve tried before, is to post things from My head, that I’VE made, that I’VE actually put thought into. I know this in itself isn’t an original concept, but more and more, less people are doing it.

You can say, “fuck sake Gavin, it’s only the internet”, and you’d probaby be right, but for someone like me who’s socially awkward, the internet is a hell of a way to get my personality out there. It does mean something to me, and guess what, as the years pass, it’ll mean something to everyone. The sad fact is, years from now, it’ll matter more than our actual social interactions do. That’s how I see things.

Another sad fact, and you’re right if you think this is petty and bitter, it pretty much is but I still think it’s a sad fact and a valid point.

If my sister posts “Yawn”, the post will be responded to at least 20 times.

Now if I post this or any of my previous blogs, I’m lucky to get a “like” on facebook.

Now, I put thought into my blogs, I think they convey something, they say something, there’s effort and sometimes emotion behind them.

The statement “yawn” is a throwaway statement, she’s either tired or bored. It’s valid enough, she’s stating her condition but there’s absolutely nothing behind it, no thought whatsoever.

What does that say about us as people?

Extra bit at the end

I love my sister, I know for a fact she has a lot to say, maybe she has just chosen not to say these things online.
